Idaho Boy: Listen to My Songs

Hard Rain

(Idaho Boy)
December 1, 2005
Ken Cofield
A weary soldier comes home from the war, but he can't leave the war behind....
Six months ago I came back from that useless war
The searing smoke of battle stained the skies
I dreamt that I’d return into your loving arms
But I tremble when I look into your eyes

Raindrops splatter harmlessly above me
But the battle’s echo haunts me from afar
Maybe Death is knocking on my window
Or maybe it’s the pounding of my heart

It’s a cold, hard rain that falls upon us
And there’s a deep, dark pain down in my heart
It’s a long, long way to the gates of Paradise
But it’s not too late for us to start

I’m sorry that I hollered at the kids today
I want to settle back to our old ways
But something happened over there that changed me
An awful truth that rattles ‘round my brain

A wounded man lay dying in the roadway
With nothing left below his shattered waist
I held him as he went to meet his maker
But I’m the one who sent him on his way

Help me, honey, help me to my feet again
I want to be the man that you first met
I want to walk through crowds and hold my head up high
A hero, not a tired and shaking vet

You and I must tell the world what happened
Together raise our voices ‘gainst the war
They’ll say we’re just two crazy, angry malcontents
But I know where I can find so many more
